Catamaran Sailing off Southern California

Now you can charter a cat for the day or for the week through West Coast Multihulls of San Diego.

Southern California is overlooked as a chartering ground, so Kurt Jerman has set out to change that. “San Diego has year round sailing,” he told me on the docks of the Strictly Sail Pacific boat show in Oakland, California, last month. “No place in this country has that kind of sailing.”

So Jerman, U.S. representative for Seawind, the Australian builders of award-winning multihulls (the 1160 was named CW Boat of the Year for Best Multihull Cruiser and Most Innovative for 2007) launched West Coast Multihulls this year. The company is also a sailing school, offering instruction according to American Sailing Association curriculum standards.

Bareboaters can choose from the Seawind 1160, Gemini 105 MC, Corsair 24 (Seawind owns Corsair Marine), Seawind 1000, and, for super fun sailing, the Weta performance trimaran, winner of the Boat of the Year 2010 award by Sailing World, CW’s sister publication.

“We’re trying to create the J World of multihulls,” Jerman said with a smile. Contact the company for bareboat and crewed chartering details and for brokerage details about the models.
