To replace the earlier 49, Jeanneau asked Philippe Briand to design a slightly longer hull, to allow room for a generator aft, while keeping the sleek profile long associated with the Sun Odyssey line. The new 49i that resulted also benefits from both the resin-injection manufacturing process and Jeanneau's revamped interior decor. It's topped off with a rig of moderate proportions that uses a short-overlap, fractional genoa for upwind power.
Belowdecks, the interior is available in a three-or four-stateroom layout, the latter of which gives up an expansive nav station in favor of a proliferation of heads—one for each cabin. The commodious saloon and port-side in-line galley remain unchanged.

A view of the cockpit shows the cockpit table mounted on the same "clerestory" plinth employed in the 44i to bring light and air into the aft cabins.

A "Performance" version of the 49i is offered with a taller, carbon mast, a feathering propeller, and other speed-enhancing extras.
