Nautitech 47

Jeremy McGeary reviews the Nautitech 47 for the 2007 Cruising World Sailboat Show

Nautitech lays claim to the performance side of the luxury-catamaran market, albeit without daggerboards, and the company's 47-foot model, while expensive, shows how. Although it's a large catamaran, at 47 feet, it's not intimidating. It's powerful and light, and from its twin stern steering stations, the helmsman can feel the wind, and sail controls are easy to reach. A good view can be had from either helm, and although the helmsman is exposed, he or she can retreat inboard with an autopilot remote.

Such an arrangement permits a fixed canopy that extends the sweeping lines of the bridgedeck saloon and shades the cockpit, which is devoted to the other important onboard activities: lounging and entertaining.

While it's by no means Spartan, the interior of the Nautitech 47, with its flat-panel furniture and spare joiner-work details, is designed to save unnecessary weight and its consequent drag on speed. The galley is "up," at the aft side of the saloon, and communicates directly between the cockpit seating and the saloon's broad, U-shaped dining area. The port hull has two spacious cabins, each with a queen-size berth and a private head, while the starboard hull can be similarly configured or made into a suite. Both hulls have extra berths in their peaks. The engines are in separate compartments aft, accessed through deck hatches

In light air, an optional sprit-mounted reacher brought the Nautitech 47 alive and provided a good indicator of the boat's performance potential. This was backed up by the motoring speed of 9.2 knots achieved at 3,000 rpm. Even at a quiet 1,500 rpm, boat speed was 5.8 knots.
