Tartan 5300: A Mini Review
Jeremy McGeary reviews this center cockpit cruiser for the CW 2009 Sailboat Show

In the Tartan 5300, Tartan Yachts is broaching new territory in two areas: This is the biggest boat the company has yet built and it's the first with a center cockpit.

Tim Jackett, the company's designer, has exploited both length and configuration to create an enormously roomy interior, which can be had with a four- or a three-stateroom layout. In the latter, the owner's cabin, aft, boasts a king-size bed.

The cockpit arrangement complements the raised saloon, which in turn allows the engine to be installed under the saloon sole, where its weight is close to the middle of the boat. Expansive and well lit under its large windows, the saloon has a lounge area, a dining area, and a desk large enough to serve both office and nav duties.
Following the pattern set on recent Tartans, the rig has double headsails, a short-overlap jib for upwind and a reacher for light airs and downwind work.
