CHARTER COMPANY VS. BROKER
Charter Companies
Charter Companies maintain fleets of sailing and powerboats at bases throughout the world. Clients can negotiate directly with companies for boats or utilize the services of brokers
Brokers
Brokers arrange bareboat and crewed sailing and power vacations for clients in domestic and international waters. Clients don't pay brokers directly; the fees are built in to the cost of the charter.

Introduction:
Ed Hamilton & Co is one of the largest and most respected yacht charter brokerages in the industry. Although we arrange charters worldwide, we are best known for the Caribbean and have been chosen by Conde Nast as the best Caribbean charter broker every year since 2002.
Company: Ed Hamilton started in the industry in 1972, when chartering was just beginning in The Virgin Islands. He worked in every part of the business; from owning and running a major bareboat company in Tortola, to designing, skippering and maintaining charter yachts of all sizes.
Ed and his wife Barbara used this experience to start Ed Hamilton & Co. which rapidly grew to be the biggest Caribbean charter brokerage in North America in the late '80s and has remained so ever since.
This success came via a unique approach to brokering charters. With his background in bareboats, Ed was keenly aware that customers always had the choice to book directly, so it was important to provide more information and better service than the bareboat companies' own agents. Because Ed Hamilton & Co. isn't tied to any one company, their staff give an independent opinion on how boats and companies compare.
The company uses the same philosophy when booking crewed yachts. When we send you a selection of yachts based on your criteria, we've taken the time to consider your requirements carefully, and you can rest assured you're getting unbiased advice from brokers who have personally visited the yachts and interviewed the crews.
As the company grew, Ed & Barbara selected a team who not only shared their approach to matching customers to the right yacht, but probably have more experience than any other team in yacht chartering today. Steve McCrea has been in the industry for over 13 years and was previously Sunsail USA's General Manager. Emily Mack came to us in 2003 from a lifetime in boating. Susan Lengyel started in the charter industry in 1996 and became Sunsail's top sales agent. Jackie Brown started with Sun Yacht Charters in 1999. Lynne Harbison, who for the last 16 years has organized all of our customers' paperwork and travel details, has been involved with chartering since her start with Bahamas Yachting Services/Sunsail in 1982.
Being the biggest is only part of the story. The reputation we enjoy in the charter industry comes from the experience of our staff and their dedication to carefully handling every individual request. While we are best known for our knowledge of the Caribbean, our team has met crews, toured yachts, bareboat bases and sailed cruising grounds from Tonga to Turkey. We offer crewed and bareboat charters worldwide.
Special Offers: Crewed yachts and bareboat companies offering specials are listed in our specials pages on our website: www.ed-hamilton.com/A/CR/CRspecials.html and www.ed-hamilton.com/A/BB/1.specials/bb.html
Boats & Rates: With over 1,300 private crewed yachts and hundreds of bareboat listings, we can arrange a charter on virtually any make or type of yacht and in any price range.
Destinations: We are best known for our many years of experience in the Caribbean, but are familiar with all the major cruising grounds and book charters regularly in The Mediterranean, Bahamas, New England (crewed only) and the Pacific islands.

I've corresponded with Eric Steinberg for years -- and wrote about some of his offshore racing electronics ideas in 2010 -- but what a pleasure it was to meet him in San Diego. Aside from overseeing Farallon Electronics and IstarGPS, he is now Director of Electronics Systems for the Americas Cup Race Management and hence responsible for nav, comms, and race management tech on some 29 support vessels. Yet it was Eric who took the time to patiently explain the many-layered systems that I ...
