Crewed Charters for Special Diets
If you thought that crewed charters offering spa packages and painting and photography and stargazing lessons were the latest trend, think again.
In a bid to make vacation sailing easier for those on gluten-free diets, Michele Wallick, who is gluten intolerant herself, and her husband, Greg, offer gluten-free crewed charters out of the U.S. Virgin Islands aboard their 2008 Robertson and Caine-built Leopard 46, Semper Fi.
Gluten, a protein in wheat, is found in breads, pasta, cereals, many processed foods, and even beer. Cross-contamination via a toaster, a pasta colander, or even a grill top can spark a severe reaction and ruin a vacation.
"We're a home away from home for those who are gluten intolerant and their families," says Wallick. "I have separate work areas in the galley for gluten-containing and gluten-free foods, and I have a number of high-quality gluten-free ingredients shipped to the island to ensure gourmet dining."
Sample menus include eggs to order, fresh fruit, and a selection of cereals, muffins, and pancakes for breakfast; grilled lemon pepper mahimahi with side salad for lunch; grilled lobster with garlic butter, green beans almondine, and honey carrots for dinner; and a flourless chocolate brownie with coconut sorbet for dessert.
