DeLorme InReach SE

Ten years ago, while cruising down to the Dominican Republic, I was tapping away on my PocketMail (remember those?) getting emails ready for the next time we happened to come across a pay phone, and I remember thinking, “How cool would it be if I could just send messages from anywhere?”

Well, call me a visionary, because with the DeLorme InReach SE, you can do just that. The InReach SE (for Screen Edition) can send and receive 160-character text messages (and post to social media… of course) with GPS coordinates from pretty much anywhere using the Iridium satellite network. You can also use the InReach SE to alert rescue authorities if you need help, and even have a back-and-forth text conversation with them.

The SE is waterproof, dustproof, and impact resistant, and features a color screen and virtual keyboard. The LED status light makes it easy to know if you have satellite reception, and the rechargeable battery is long lasting. All in all, this is a pretty cool little device—glad I thought of it! Check out the DeLorme site for more info.
