Power is often at a premium on a cruising sailboat, so leaving a night light burning may not be practical. The Everest Sensor Utility Light ($30) from Lumatec, though, has a built-in motion detector that, when it's in automatic mode, turns the light on automatically if it senses motion within 15 feet. The light will stay on for 30 seconds then turn itself off, making it an at-your-call night light or even a security light. An extendable flexible shaft allows the LED beam to be directed up and down. It also makes a good reading light. It takes four AA batteries that should keep it running for 150 hours continuously.
