Caribbean’s Largest Marina Set for Punta Cana, D.R.

Cap Cana, a new Caribbean resort destination in the Dominican Republic, has contracted Kaye Pearson, marine-industry professional and president of International Marinas and Yachting Promotions, Inc., to advise on the development of what will be the Caribbean’s largest marina, according to Ricardo Hazoury, president of Cap Cana.

With marina facilities designed to host more than 1,000 boats including some of the world’s most luxurious super-yachts, Cap Cana’s harbor may emerge as a key player in the Caribbean’s maritime industry. It’s strategic location will fill the void for those looking to dock while traveling the 250-mile yachting distance between Puerto Rico and Turks and Caicos.

“This project will raise the bar for future marine developments.” said Kaye Pearson, producer of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, The Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami, and The Palm Beach Boat Show. “Given Pearson’s ingenuity and expertise in the field, it made sense to ask him to advise on this project,” said Hazoury.

According to Pearson, currently there are more yachts in the super-yacht and mega-yacht category being constructed by shipyards than at any other time in history. There is a significant deficit of berthing space in the world for these larger boats and Cap Cana is creating a niche to accommodate them.

Cap Cana’s marina will have onsite maintenance and logistical facilities, including Port Authority and Customs. It will also be the first inland marina in the Dominican Republic allowing for better protection and security. A barrier reef exists next to the planned channel entrance allowing incoming sailors to be met with calm, protective waters.

The primary focus of Cap Cana’s nautical facilities will be the Grand Canal measuring 200 feet wide, 1.25 miles long, and 13 feet deep. The Grand Canal will be framed on both sides by a pedestrian village featuring a promenade of elegant shops, restaurants and nightclubs, and will connect the marina to Cap Cana’s estate residences, townhomes, and condominiums. Guests will be transported around the Grand Canal by a Vaporetto shuttle-boat system.

Cap Cana, located on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic near Punta Cana, spans out over 30,000 acres, including 5.3 miles of pristine beach and 200-foot bluffs. Cap Cana is set to be a year-round pedestrian destination featuring the Caribbean’s largest marina, three Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses, 14 luxury hotels, permanent and part-time residences, yacht clubs, beach clubs, health spas, and casinos.
