Sunsail Launches 3rd Annual Art Contest for Kids
Sunsail Sailing Vacations is hosting its third annual contest for kids, which invites kids ages eight to 18 to express their own artistic vision of "The Art of Sailing." Winners of the art contest will receive prizes (see below) and the opportunity to have their work displayed at boat shows, in sailing magazines, and on the Sunsail website.
In a continuing effort to promote a love of sailing in future generations, Sunsail has sponsored two junior sailor contests in the past. The first two contests—"Why I Love Sailing" and "Why I Will Always Sail—were essay contests and received over 1,000 entries from junior sailors from 47 states and provinces. This year, Sunsail will be mailing out 13,500 promotional contest posters to junior sailors all over North America, and they expect the number of contest entries this year to double.
Young people from eight to 18 are welcome to submit one 11-by-17 two-dimensional piece of artwork depicting their expression of "The Art of Sailing." The medium can be pencil, pen, marker, crayon, paint, collage, photography, or a combination of all of these, however computer-generated artwork will not be accepted. What should kids express in their artwork? Whatever it is about sailing that inspires them and makes them love the sport—in other words, the skys is the limit. The deadline for the contest is August 31, 2002.
Entries will be grouped into three age categories (8-11, 12-15, 16-18) with one grand prize overall and first, second, third, honorable mention and originality prizes awarded to each age group. In October, all the finalists artwork will be displayed at the Annapolis Boat Show. In the fall, representatives from marine publications will judge the entries and an award ceremony to honor the winners will be held in February 2003 at the Chicago Boat Show.
The following prizes will be awarded to winners of "The Art of Sailing" contest:
Grand Prize: One Performance Sailcraft Byte or Optimist sailboat for the best overall entry, approximate value up to $4000.
First Prize (One in each age group awarded): One Week Vacation for Four at Sunsails Club Colonna on Antigua, approximate value $3500.
