    2.  As you remove the drum, the only small pieces you’ll find easy to lose are the pawl springs and the pawls; keep spares on hand. If the pawls are at all worn, they should be replaced. The stainless-steel needle bearings on which the winch turns are contained in the black plastic and stay together when you pull the plastic off the shaft.

    5.  Once they’re clean, use oil rather than grease to lubricate the
pawls to prevent them from sticking.

    9. Thoroughly coat the needle bearings, keeping in mind that using too much grease will increase friction and quickly attract salt and dirt.

    10. To reassemble, replace gears on the base and shaft in the reverse order from which you removed them. Slide the bearings and any spacers (the white ring between the bearings) over the center support shaft, then replace the drum. Lastly, replace the self-tailing mechanism, making sure it’s positioned so that line spools off in the correct direction.

    1. You’ll need a screwdriver and Allen wrenches to overhaul a winch. For cleaning, you’ll want lots of paper towels or rags and a toothbrush. Diesel fuel, mineral spirits, or WD-40 all work to remove the old grease.

    6.  Most winch companies sell their own grease in tubes, or you can use a brand such as Super Lube Winch Grease.

    3.  Undo the bolts to remove the main support, then disassemble the spindle; the remaining gears should slip easily off their shafts. Once you have all the pieces in a plastic tub or similar container, it’s time
    to start the cleaning.
