Coast Guard Finds Sailor’s Body in San Francisco Bay

The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing sailor after the man’s body was discovered in vicinity of Pt. Blunt on Angel Island near the Golden Gate Bridge, Tuesday morning.The Coast Guard received a report of a body at Angel Island, and the Marin County Coroner later identified the body as the missing man.

The search was launched Monday morning after the Coast Guard watchstanders received an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) distress signal from the 30-foot sailing vessel Alma. An MH-65 Dolphin aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco, and 47-foot Motor Lifeboat Boat crew from the Coast Guard Station Golden Gate were launched to search the San Francisco Bay for the individual operating the boat. The search continued today until the identity of the missing boater was confirmed.

“The Coast Guard extends our deepest condolences to the parents, extended family and friends of the victim of this tragedy,” said Capt. Greg Stump, the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco commander. “We give thanks to his family for providing information about his vessel, experience, and other details that aided in our search.”

Stump also thanked Coast Guard partner agencies that assisted in the search including the National Park Service, Southern Marin County Fire Department, and the San Francisco Police Department Marine Unit.
