Retiring Cruising Association president Robin Guilleret (right) hands the President's Burgee to Robin Knox-Johnston.

As the Cruising Association prepares for its centenary year, its council members unanimously elected Sir Robin Knox-Johnston president for 2008.

Knox-Johnston was the first person to circumnavigate the globe singlehanded and nonstop in 1968 aboard Suhaili, his 32-foot Colin Archer-designed wooden ketch. And in May 2007, Knox-Johnston completed his second solo circumnavigation, finishing fourth in the Velux 5 Oceans Race aboard Saga Insurance, an Open 60.

The Cruising Association has an international membership of cruising sailors, and it maintains what is generally regarded as the world's best cruise-planning library. Knox-Johnston calls its Cruising Almanac "one of the musts for any boat's bookshelf."
