The Newport Bermuda Race

It all starts just outside the harbor in Newport, Rhode Island.
Every other year in mid-June, as many as 200 boats race 635 miles from Newport, Rhode Island, to Bermuda. The race, established in 1906, was the first ocean race for amateur sailors in boats under 80 feet. Since then, it's attracted almost 4,500 boats crewed by roughly 46,000 men and women who've raced almost a collective 3 million miles to Bermuda. The fleet is divided into several divisions, and in keeping with the 100-year-old Corinthian spirit of the race, most crews still consist of friends and family members. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Over 160 boats have registered for this year's race, which starts on June 18, and registration remains open until April 1.
