Finish Your Lines Right

Finish Your Lines Right
Published Jan 22, 2009

1. Here's an extreme case: This preventer line looks like Medusa's head on a bad-hair day. To prepare it for whipping, I've worked the cover back over the core by pulling it, so the cover won¿t bunch up when it goes through a block. It's taped where it's still sound, and I've assembled the tools I'm going to use to make a proper whipping: beeswax, a sailmaker's needle, and flat, waxed polyester twine. Regular three-strand twine works, too, but I prefer the flat. A sailmaker's palm comes in handy as well.
