Catana 50 : Mini Review

Cruising World 2008 New Boat Showcase
by Jeremy McGeary
Catana 50 : Mini Review
Catana50St

Catana has long emphasized the performance possibilities offered by catamarans and the new Catana 50 adheres to that philosophy. Designed to replace the 471, it continues the company's tradition of placing helm positions on the stern of each hull, so the driver can see the trim of the sails, and of juicing the boat's performance to weather with the use of daggerboards. The outward canted hulls and high bows give the boat the characteristic Catana "bring it on" stance which, together with Catana's statement that the boat is not intended for bareboat charter service, further emphasizes that it's not a dockside condo.

Belowdecks, a couple of layout options backed up by a comprehensive equipment specification reinforce the owner-oriented design brief by providing a master and two guest cabins with an option for a crew cabin.
