For 36 years, Sabre Yachts has delivered a range of cruiser racers that offer a step up in performance and outfit than the bigger run-of-production companies. Over that period, it has built a loyal following, and now offers them the 36-foot Sabre Spirit. It's a daysailer/weekender that retains the performance expected of the brand but is not burdened by the bulk, weight, and expense of cruising accessories that, because of how most owners use their boats, usually just tag along for the ride.

In profile, the Sabre Spirit takes its cues from the 1960s, the golden age of the CCA, but the working parts both under the water and above are utterly contemporary in thought, materials, and execution. Two keel options are available, one about six and half feet deep (for Maineiacs) and the other just under five (for Chesaphreaks and their southern brethren), the mast is carbon fiber, and the sails are up to the owner. The interior is simple and simply equipped but comfortable enough to satisfy that irresistible urge to overnight in a deserted cove.
