Naxos Harbor Greece

Naxos Harbor Greece, Sept 2012.

Naxos harbor has significantly improved since our last visit in 2003. Not only has the harbor had a face-lift but so has the entire town. In the past Naxos was a typical Cyclades Port but it was a bit run-down, today it is just a wonderful place to visit. The new harbor is still in the town center but now has many more slips. The harbor fee is still approximately only 20Euros per night with power and water for a 50' yacht, and the new slips are more protected from the meltemi, plus it's a lot cleaner and much more upper scale.

The town is bustling with great tavernas, and there are many new stylish restaurants and shops. We found the night life to be better than most Islands, and the prices were significantly less than Mykonos or Santorini. In the back streets there are many more shops and a great "street-walk" full of bars, café's, bakery's and boutiques. The walk in the other direction to the "The Gate" (the famous Apollon temple 530BC visible from the sea) is all also new, with great chic sunset bars along route. There is now a protected cove area created by a new sea-wall at "The Gate" peninsula that is great to anchor in overnight if you chose not to use the marina. They have fresh water showers and a designated swim area within the cove.

If you are going to sail these waters I'd highly recommend Naxos as part of your sail plan.
