Ed Sherman

Ed currently serves as Curriculum Director for the American Boat & Yacht Council. In this role he is responsible for all course and certification program development.

Prior to serving in this capacity, Ed served as Chairman of the Marine Technology Department at the New England Institute of Technology in Warwick, Rhode Island for fifteen years. During this period, Ed started his own company, Sherman Marine, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, specializing in composite repairs, marine electrical installations and surveys, and diesel engine service. Over the last 12 years Sherman Marine has evolved into publishing and consulting endeavors only. Ed has worked with boat builders, marine surveyors, field service personnel, and engineering staff in every major boatbuilding and service area of the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. In addition, Ed has provided extensive training for USCG, Navy, and NOAA personnel.

Ed is the former electronics editor for Cruising World and still contributes technical articles for Hands-On Sailor. He has served as a CW Boat of the Year judge since 2005. Ed is a frequent contributor to Professional Boatbuilder Magazine as well as other well-known trade journals.

Ed is the author of four books, Outboard Engines, Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Repair, The Powerboater’s Guide to Electrical Systems, and most recently the second edition of the Minor Brotherton classic, The 12-Volt Bible for Boats, all published by the International Marine division of McGraw-Hill. Ed’s fourth book, Advanced Marine Electrical and Electronics Troubleshooting and Installation, was released in July of 2007.

Over the years Ed has been an avid cruiser in both power and sailing craft.

Ed loves to share his extensive knowledge of marine systems and is a very experienced presenter to groups of up to several hundred people. He is available on a fee basis.
