John Harries and Phyllis Nickel

Liveaboards with 100,000 offshore miles, John and Phyllis specialize in high latitudes topics.

John and Phyllis have spent the past 16 years living aboard and cruising on their boat, Morgan’s Cloud, a 56 foot McCurdy Rhodes custom aluminum cutter. They have sailed over 100,000 offshore miles, most of it in the high latitudes of the North Atlantic.

Their destination presentations use two screens, one with spectacular slides and the other with maps to keep viewers oriented. Lectures include:

White Space: Voyages off the Charts to East Greenland
This show is a compendium of their three visits to the remote Southeast Coast of Greenland-350 barely charted miles of magnificent coastline, with mountains, deep fjords and countless glaciers.

Midnight Sun and Midday Dark: Two Years in Arctic Norway
Phyllis and John are the authors of the Norwegian Cruising Guide, Third Edition, eBook. Join them as they explore Lofoten, a chain of spiky mountainous islands dotted with small fishing harbours; Tromsø, where they spent two winters living on board Morgan’s Cloud at 70°N; Nordkapp, the northernmost point of Europe; and remote Finnmark to the Russian border, where they sailed further east than Istanbul. Their slides of spectacular fjords and isolated offshore islands will make you want to voyage to Norway without delay!

A Voyage to Svalbard (Spitsbergen)
Further north than the northernmost point of Alaska, Svalbard truly is another world. This is the story of their seven-week cruise on Morgan’s Cloud, including two transits of Hinlopen Strait and a visit to Nordaustlandet, the remote and uninhabited island that together with Spitsbergen and scores of smaller islands make up the Svalbard Archipelago.

After 35 years of maintaining and refitting boats, John and Phyllis are well qualified to discuss boat handling, selection and preparation both for the high latitudes and for more temperate climates. They are open to developing technical presentations to suit their audience.
