93-year-old Anchovy Pulled from Watery Grave

Herreshoff sloop recovered from the bottom of Narraganset Bay 10 days after sinking.

The Museum of Yachting in Newport, Rhode Island, has recovered Anchovy, a 1916 Herreshoff Fish Class sloop that sank on September 2 in about 50 feet of water off Rose Island in Narragansett Bay.

The two crewmembers on board when the boat sank were quickly pulled from the water by Team Alinghi, which was nearby competing in the Farr 40 Pre-World Championship Regatta.

Several individuals and organizations assisted in the recovery, including Oldport Marine. After several unsuccessful attempts, a volunteer diver located the boat on September 11. On first inspection, museum officials reported that the boat looked to be in fine condition, and with a bit of TLC, should be back in the water next spring.

One of the original Fish Class sloops commissioned by Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, Anchovy was donated to the Museum of Yachting in 1985 by Roy C. Gumpel.
