Amistad America, Inc. was named the recipient of a second-year $50,000 grant award from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, in New Haven, Connecitcut. The grant will be used to fund a permanent traveling educational exhibit that will sail with Freedom Schooner Amistad to ports nationally and internationally. Funds will also be used to cover a portion of docent costs, printing/duplication, and education staff salaries. This year, Freedom Schooner Amistad logged some 2,500 nautical miles taking her story to 20 ports from Marthas Vineyard to Miami. She has directly touched the lives of an estimated quarter-million visitors of all ages. In addition, public and student audiences lacking direct access to the vessel have been reached via print materials and curricula produced by AMISTAD America, Inc., which also has an active Internet site (www.amistadamerica.org).
