It's not too soon to start planning for next summer's adventures and I can't think of a better time to work on plans than while building myself a boat. In this case I'm talking about a kayak. The kits from Chesapeake Light Craft have long been favorites of mine and their new Wood Duck 10 and 12 look like winners for the first-time builder. The stitch-and-glue kits come with all the wood precut so all you need to do is stitch the parts together using the pre-drilled holes, apply the (included) epoxy, and paint or varnish the finished product. Included are all the materials necessary to build the boat, complete with a hatch in the aft deck and a comfortable seat and foot-brace. Options include an airtight hatch assembly to keep lunch or luggage dry, and a sapele-wood deck for those who have the skill and desire to really make their boat a standout. Kits start at $750 for the Wood Duck 10 and up to $850 for the 12-footer with the sapele deck.
