The Piscataqua, a replica of the gundalow sail-powered barges that once plied the waters of New Hampshire's Great Bay, was launched in Portsmouth to great fanfare in December. Come spring, the Piscataqua, whose design goes back to the 1600s, will visit schools on the bay and be available to take students and the public on cruises to raise awareness of the environmental factors that confront this unique body of water. The 65-foot Piscataqua was built by local craftsmen in a shed erected at Strawbery Banke, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
