Cruising World Nabs Two Top Awards

New York, N.Y.

Cruising World, the magazine for avid sailors, took home two top journalism honors in one week. First was Folio: Magazine’s Editorial Excellence Award in the boating/yachting category for consumer magazines, followed by the Genmar Trophy from Boating Writers International for Best Article of the Year. Cruising World is published monthly by World Publications.

The Folio competition was based on how each magazine entry fulfilled its editorial mission. In evaluating Cruising World, one judge noted, “This magazine really delivers from the useful to the joyful. I liked to see a wide-open two-page feature up front. The two-page contents is great, and the outrageously creative cover and inside feature spread take the cake.”

“Our entire editorial and art teams are proud and honored to receive this prestigious award,” says Herb McCormick, editor of Cruising World. “We’ve made a conscious effort over the past two years to ramp up the quality of writing, the level of expertise in our technical stories and the presentation of our layouts. It’s extremely gratifying to be recognized for our efforts.”

Cruising World was also honored for the work of editor-at-large Bernadette Bernon. Her article “Midterm Reflections from a Semester At Sea” in the October 2001 issue caught the attention of Boating Writers International, which awarded it the second-annual Genmar Trophy, and a $5,000 prize, as the Best Article of the Year.

Bernon is in the third year of an extended cruise with her husband, Douglas, aboard their 39-foot cutter, Ithaka. The couple write a column called “The Log of Ithaka” for Cruising World and its Web site.

“As a longtime colleague of Bernadette’s, I’ve always respected and admired her gifts as an editor and writer,” McCormick says. “But her experiences and adventures since setting sail have clearly inspired her to greater heights. I’m very pleased that Bernadette’s fine story has received the recognition it deserves and that Cruising World is a place where great sailing writers can showcase their work.”
