Mahina Expeditions

Blue Water Sailing School
This award-winning school, which operates out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Newport, Rhode Island; the Bahamas; and the Virgin Islands; teaches according to the American Sailing Association curriculum, offering everything from basic sailing to offshore passagemaking.

Bluewater Sailing
This school, based out of Marina Del Rey, California, teaches according to the American Sailing Association curriculum, from basic keelboat sailing to celestial navigation and offshore passagemaking, in private or small group lessons.

Club Nautique
Besides teaching a lineup of basic courses following the US Sailing curriculum, Club Nautique offers an extensive passagemaking training program, in two stages—coastal and offshore.


Confident Captain
This school, in Newport, Rhode Island, serves mariners looking to gain formal certification as U.S. Coast Guard licensed captains or as Yachtmasters, a program overseen by the Royal Yachting Association in the United Kingdom.

Fair Wind Sailing
Besides on board basic instruction in the Great Lakes and Bahamas, this school offers a custom curriculum in ocean passagemaking as well as celestial navigation in the Caribbean aboard a monohull and a catamaran.

J World Sailing School
Among an array of skills building courses offered aboard fleets on the U.S. East and West Coasts, J World conducts multi-day liveaboard and coastal passagemaking courses with a small ratio of students to coach.


Mahina Expeditions
Voyagers John Neal and Amanda Swan Neal have shown countless successful applicants passagemaking around the world aboard Mahina Tiare III, a Hallberg-Rassy 46. Their focus is on seamanship, navigation, and heavy-weather tactics.

Modern Sailing School and Club
This California-based company offers a range of courses and makes the world its platform for voyage instruction. Adventure Sailing trips taught using the American Sailing Association curriculum are offered in locations like the South Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean.

New Jersey Sailing School
Learn through the ASA curriculum and join one-way deliveries for offshore experience.


OCSC Sailing
Based in San Francisco Bay, OCSC offers the full complement of instruction according to the US Sailing curriculum, from beginner to coastal and offshore, in the bay and beyond the California coast.

Steve and Doris Colgate’s Offshore Sailing School
Besides its well-known extensive array of courses for all levels taught through the US Sailing curriculum, Offshore also offers passagemaking in two installments—coastal and offshore. The school is located in Florida but offers its curriculum in diverse locations including the Caribbean.

The School of Sailing and Seamanship, Orange Coast College
Besides a range of courses for beginners and professional mariners, Orange Coast College, in Newport Beach, California, also offers the opportunity to cruise offshore and learn. Sail a leg aboard the 65-foot Alaska Eagle and build on fundamentals learned via the US Sailing curriculum.
