In John Mecray’s new painting, The Run to Block Island, two of Olin Stephens’ most successful and beautiful designs, the yawl rigged Dorade and the sloop rigged Sonny, spinnakers set, reach out of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay past the famous Castle Hill lighthouse.

Sonny’s owner commissioned the painting, and his Feadship, Krisujen, can be seen approaching the bay from the south. Both Dorade and Sonny have been carefully restored to near perfection in recent years. When they’re not out sailing in the summertime, both boats can be seen on the docks at the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island. Typical of Mecray, this painting is a sailor’s delight: Technical details are interpreted in a very satisfying way, and he’s an expert at capturing the feel of a classic under full sail. Collectors have snapped up his more than 50 paintings; most of Mecray’s limited-edition prints have sold out.

In a special arrangement with Mystic Seaport, Cruising World has set aside a limited edition of 150 signed and numbered prints for its readers. A number of signed and numbered giclee canvases will also be available. Mystic Seaport Museum reports that the value of a signed lithograph-edition Mecray print after a series has sold out is between $1,200 and $2,200.
