Melt-in-Your-Mouth Brownies

These cake-like treats are a chocolate lover's delight (recipe from "The Kindness of Strangers," People & Food, February 2005).

1 to 1 1/4 cups Bisquick
1 cup sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 cup milk
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 teaspoon corn or maple syrup
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 egg (optional)
Confectioners’ sugar (optional)
Strawberry syrup (optional)
Fresh strawberries (optional)

In a large bowl, mix dry ingredients. Het 1/2 cup of milk, syrup, and the butter or margarine until melted. Add to dry ingredients and mix well. Heat another 1/2 cup of milk and 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with a bit of water. Mix well. Add to bowl and whisk or beat thoroughly. (The batter should be quite soupy). These brownies are very moist; if you like a cake-like consistency, add an egg. Pour batter into greased baking tin and bake at 350 F until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool, sprinkly with confectioners’ sugar, then garnish with strawberry syrup and fresh strawberries, if available.
