Off the rugged Kohala Coast of Hawai‘i Island, a small nonprofit is making big waves for the next generation of sailors. The Kohala Sailing Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, offers free, hands-on sailing experiences for local youth ages 11 to 17, many of whom have never set foot on a sailboat before.
These on-the-water days are more than just joyrides. Students learn the fundamentals of sailing, build confidence, develop leadership skills, and forge a lifelong connection to the ocean. “We see the transformation happen right on deck,” said the Foundation’s outreach coordinator. “They step aboard unsure, and they leave with a sense of belonging to the sea.”
The program is fueled by donations, private charter bookings, and sponsorships from both local supporters and the wider sailing community. Now, the Foundation is inviting sailors and maritime professionals from around the world to get involved.
Visiting cruisers, coaches, captains, and marine educators are welcome to join a sail when their travels bring them to Hawai‘i Island. Their presence can have a lasting impact on the keiki and provide a meaningful experience for visitors as well.
Those unable to participate in person can still make a difference by funding a youth day sail through a one-time sponsorship. Donors are recognized on the Foundation’s website, social channels, and with a linked logo on its sponsor page.
