Quick Look: Fastcat 435

Cruising World 2008 New Boat Showcase
African Cats

This joint design effort between Angelo Lavranos and African Cats’ principal, Gideon Goudsmit puts the emphasis on speed. Construction is of epoxy-resin-infused fiberglass with carbon reinforcements, and Divnycell foam cores in hull, deck, and bulkheads. The standard accommodation plan shows each hull occupied by a suite comprised of a king-size berth, “bathroom,” and separate shower. Weight is kept to a minimum, and the performance data included with the boat spec sheets graphically illustrate what happens to potential boat speed when you pile on weight: It drops from a max of about 14 knots at normal half-load displacement of 14,000 pounds to 10 knots all up with full tanks, full complement, and all the goodies heaving it up to 22,000 pounds.

The Green Motion Hybrid’s electric drives are on hydraulically operated legs; swing down one motor or both for propulsion or for regeneration purposes, swing them out of the water when sailing to eliminate drag or when at rest to avoid marine growth (or to beach the boat with no risk of damage to the props).
