Anthony Smith, an 84-year-old Englishman, and a team of older gentlemen are just about to head out across the Atlantic on a raft made of water pipes. The plan is to “sail” An-Tiki from the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, and not ironically, they hope to help raise awareness (and money) for WaterAid, a charity dedicated to overcoming poverty by enabling the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene education.

The traditionally simple raft (equipped with solar-powered electronic comms and nav equipment) has been assembled on the island of la Gomera in the Canaries and they could depart any day now.
