Recently, CW associate editor Jen Brett had the opportunity to check out the new Gunboat factory in Wanchese, NC, on Pamlico Sound to see just what goes into producing this very cool carbon-fiber catamaran.
“It’s going to take a savvy, experienced couple to run this boat, but everything is there to run it really well,” says Boat of the Year judge Tim Murphy of the Outremer 5X.
“I found the steering, the hardware and the metalwork all to be excellent. The target demographic here is ‘real’ sailors. And this boat sails very well,” says Boat of the Year judge Mark Schrader of the Catana 42 Carbon.
With nearly 50 Atlantic series catamarans roaming the seas, Chris White’s designs have evolved. Still, the new 47 — sporting twin MastFoils (think narrow wings) and dual furling jibs — is akin to the jump man made from apes. Let’s call this a whole new species of ocean-going cat.
Multihull Company founder Phil Berman has sailed and sold many a catamaran. With customer feedback, he’s launched the Balance line, with a 42-footer on the way and a 45-footer to follow. These are for bluewater voyagers and liveaboards who will appreciate a lively sail.
