In The Present Sea: Webb Chiles Hits the Web

New website catalogs the writings of four-time circumnavigator

Webb Chiles

Sailor, author, and frequent Cruising World contributor Webb Chiles has a new website,, where he has posted an archive of his writing since 1977-or at least, those pieces that didn't go down with his 36-foot sloop, Resurgam, when it sank off of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1992.

Chiles gives a lucid account of that catastrophe in "Swimming," which details the 26 hours he spent swimming across the Gulf Stream before coming upon an anchored fishing boat. The memoir is one of countless extraordinary tales Chiles has accumulated over the last 30 years, which have included four circumnavigations, six wives, and one stint in a Saudi Arabian prison.
