There was lots of excitement on the Newport, Rhode Island, waterfront for a Tuesday in mid January. An early morning fire erupted on the second floor of the building that houses The Ship’s Store and Rigging on Bowen’s Wharf.

No one was in the building at the time, but the store, on the first floor, contained inventory that was damaged as the blaze was extinguished.

From the hotel and marina next door, a group of us watched as smoke poured from vents on the building and firefighters made fairly quick work of things.

According to published reports, the fire was thought to have been electrical in nature and apparently started in the ceiling of a first floor bathroom.
