It’s such a simple idea that you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it. Solar-powered lights are nothing new, but they typically take form as garden lights. The LumiQuest SoLite is similar, but its design is much more useful on board. Billed as “the world’s only solar light bulb,” the SoLite looks like just that and is about the same size. CW associate editor Jen Brett tested one aboard her boat last month and says it’s become indispensible. Its bright LED lights have three settings (high, low, and off), last more than six hours, and automatically shut off in bright light. The small solar panel can be pivoted to catch the most sunlight, and the included bungee cord makes it easy to attach this weatherproof light to almost anything. Jen keeps it tethered to the mizzen boom to serve as a cockpit light, which is handy for coming back aboard after a late night.
