Reader Tip: Staple Puller

No need for a special tool—here's a simple modification that can turn needlenose pliers into something even more useful for rigging or canvas work.

DIY sailor Rudy Sechez has come up with a simple way to make pulling staples or inserting or removing pins during canvas or sail projects, or inserting or removing cotter rings in rigging easier. He suggests making a minor alteration to a pair of 6-inch needlenose pliers by grinding the tips to a wedge shape (check out the diagram for the recommended shape).
