Applications are being accepted for the second annual Glo-Tech Scholarship of the IYRS School of Technology and Trades in Newport, Rhode Island. The scholarship was created in the memory of Gloria Borrego, a Whitbread and America’s Cup veteran and marine systems expert. Borrego, whose career spanned 34 years, started as a yacht captain in Key West and ended as an electronics systems instructor and top troubleshooter for Brunswick. She died of cancer in 2024 at the age of 64.
Former crewmates, friends and industry members developed the scholarship to encourage more women to pursue careers in the marine trades or advanced manufacturing industries. Besides her standout skills as an offshore sailor, Borrego’s career included roles as a CAD & CNC operator, boat builder, marine engineer and project manager in years when few women took on such roles.
Marie Ostrand was the first scholarship recipient in 2025. Ostrand used the award to get her RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate as well as complete an MCA Approved Engine Course to advance her career in yacht operations.
Women who are considering careers in technical areas including manufacturing, installation, maintenance or repair in the marine or other high-tech industries are encouraged to apply for the $3,000 award.
The successful applicant will use the funds to offset costs in a wide variety of educational endeavors at IYRS or other educational institutions. Applicants must be age 25 or above, with at least 4 years relevant work experience. The submission deadline is December 15, 2026. Complete information is available at IYRS.edu/careers/Glo-Tech.
