Cruising Haiti Update

The Seven Seas Cruising Association appoints Host for Ile à Vache, Haiti.

SAMUEL ALTEMA

Seven Seas Cruising Association Director Judi Mkam announced today that Jean Samuel Altema has been appointed the SSCA Host for Ile à Vache, Haiti. The designation is a well earned recognition of the assistance to cruising sailors that Samuel has provided informally for fifteen years.

The Altema family are long time residents of Ile à Vache, and Samuel has for many years been the go-to man for, among others, the Canadian non-profit group, Friends of Ile à Vache. His services for many cruisers have included arranging for visits to Madame Bernard and other parts of Ile à Vache as well as information about and transportation to points on the main island such as Les Cayes, Jacmel, and Port-au-Prince.

Educated in Les Cayes, Samuel’s fluency in Creole, French, and English is invaluable for the international cruisers who call at Ile à Vache. He is the proprietor of a well-stocked sundries shop on the Baie a Feret in Caille Coq.
