EP Carry Launches Gen2 Electric Outboard

EP Carry's redesigned Gen2 electric outboard delivers more thrust, modular battery options and a 20-mile range at full throttle.

Every sailor who has wrestled a heavy, fuel-stinking outboard over a pitching transom in a harbor chop knows the appeal of a better solution. EP Carry’s new Gen2 electric outboard won’t fix the chop, but at 14 pounds it goes a long way toward fixing everything else.

The North Bend, Washington-based company has released the Gen2 as an evolution of its original award-winning motor, retaining the ultralight patented design that made it a favorite for ship-to-shore dinghy work while adding meaningful performance upgrades. An advanced controller delivers 22% more propulsive thrust with no increase in size or weight—a notable engineering achievement in a category where adding power almost always means adding bulk.

Range, the perennial anxiety of electric propulsion, gets a serious answer here. The Gen2 is capable of pushing easily driven vessels up to 1,000 pounds and 19 feet at speeds that can exceed 20 miles on a single charge, depending on battery configuration. The motor accepts 12V, 24V, or 36V LFP batteries (off-the-shelf lithium iron phosphate cells rather than proprietary packs) giving owners the freedom to upgrade as battery technology improves and costs drop. An optional Bluetooth monitor displays charge levels and power consumption in real time from a smartphone, taking the guesswork out of range management. EP Carry founder Joe Grez has logged more than 800 nautical miles on solar-powered micro-cruiser expeditions using the system, recharging entirely from two small panels.

The complete integrated package (motor, waterproof 11.25 Ah LFP battery in a buoyant 6.4-pound case, shoulder strap, 24-inch cables, five-hour charger, and security lock) is purpose-built for dinghy dock service on vessels up to 13 feet and 600 pounds, with 60 minutes of full-throttle run time out of the box.

New customization options broaden the Gen2’s appeal beyond the ship-to-shore role. A detachable tiller handle accommodates short or long configurations, an optional tiller extension suits boats requiring greater distance from the motor, and shaft length kits, remote throttle options, and a transom adjust system for severe rakes make the motor adaptable to a wider range of small craft—skiffs, kayaks, beach cats and small daysailers among them.

Customers of the original EP Carry motors have logged more than 73,000 collective hours of use. The Gen2 ships now, priced at $1,489 for the motor-only package and $1,999 for the complete integrated kit, with a two-year limited warranty and free wireless firmware updates included.
