Many boats have their radar antenna mounted up the mast, but if it’s fixed in position, when the boat heels, the units effectiveness will decrease. We wrote about Scanstrut’s Self-Leveling Backstay Radar Mount earlier this year in Cruising World (see “Keep Your Radar on the Level,” May 2007), now they’re coming out with a Self-Leveling Mast Mount. It will allow you to mount your antenna as high as possible, increasing your radar’s usable range. The mast adapter is anodized aluminum and attaches with four feet, secured at 12 points. The antenna cradle and radome plate are stainless steel and hydraulic dampening stops the antenna from swinging around when the boat’s rocking in a seaway. The price is about £500 in the UK so look for it in the United States for around $1200. Scanstrut is sold by Ocean Equipment in the U.S.; (949) 588-1470, www.scanstrut.com
